How Team Yankee Dynamic Points are changing the game

It has been six months since Battlefront introduce Dynamic Points to Team Yankee and fundamentally changed how our own local play group is playing the game. The primary changes made were drastic point reductions in Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), a minor point reduction in most nations helicopters (soviet hinds actually received a justified increase imo), and an increase in the cost of Anti-air (AA) of almost all types.

In the year of play before the points change I rarely would ever bring any MBTs (I own British and Iranian armies) but now it seems heavy metal rules the battlefield. Units like the M1 Abrams, Leopard 2, and T-80s have become significantly more affordable making its easy field them in large numbers. Being able to have an answer to T-80s has always been a concern in list building but now more and more MBTs are on the battlefield. It is harder to counter them than ever without bringing your own.

In this dynamic points meta infantry are entirely revitalized and expanding their role. Often always taken as cheap but very difficult to dislodge objective holders, their ability to carry MBT busting guided missiles is looking better than ever. They have long been cost effective defensive units, who excel in terrain heavy maps. Investing in the versatility of infantry can feel better than ever but still they remain extremely susceptibly to artillery and airpower. The latter of which has seen an advantage gained by the points change.

Anti-air across the board received a minor cost increase while most helicopter units were reduced. The cost isn't significant enough to make running AA prohibitive, but the investment now may require bringing less AA or dropping other support units. Air superiority is more viable as a strategy than previously, and exploiting weaknesses in enemies AA coverage is now an important skill. Lighter vehicles and artillery removing AA units will open up more room for Aircraft runs and helicopter attacks on MBTs side armor.

Perhaps the largest growing pain to come with the dynamic points is the role of minor nations. Without the options of MBTs and less advance anti-tank options it feels like they have been delegated to lower point games only. Minor nation players seem to be at a major disadvantage currently and I don't know if I see help coming anytime soon barring entirely new army books with MBTs of their own or more support/infantry options that can actually handle the heavy armor of major nations.

The introduction of dynamic points has succeeded in shaking up the meta both locally and in the more widespread competitive scene. Previously, I never ran Challengers for my British army, and now I don't show up without them. In a lot of ways, the shake-up has created a more interesting and complex way to run combined arms lists. However, the current cost of retiring my Iranian army is a massive disappointment personally. For as much as I like Team Yankee, and I do, their points valuations are just all over the place.

Dynamic points is an attempt to rectify some of it, so I applaud that they are at least putting in some effort, but the points balance is a little crazy in places

Yeah creating new problems trying to solve the old. I don't hate how the game feels right now for my Brits but mothballing my Iranians is seriously a bummer feelsbad moment. I do hope the "modernize" minor nations or something
