At the start of February I had the good fortune to first thing in the morning load up my buddies car and drive the two hours to Jacksonville for Skirmish Game Con. 3 of us carpooled together with the intention of playing in the One Page Rules Age of Fantasy Tournament and enjoying the general tabletop gaming convention atmosphere. It was a good drive up catching up with friends and that vibe kept on from the moment we walked in to the Hotel. It was my first year at Skirmish but I was pleased with the amount of familiar faces from the staff and in the main game room.
The layout of the Convention was solid, I would have preferred a large main hall area but necessity of available space forced the con the be split among a handful of rooms. From the moment we got to the registrations desk on ward it felt like catching up with old friends and meeting plenty of new ones. We checked in with the TO before heading to do some shopping and checking out the impressive tables being set up for a wide variety of games.
The tournament was run extremely smoothly. There was a friendly jovial vibe between participants. 2 totally new to OPR players and a few first timers for a tournament play. We had players from Orlando, Tampa, Ocala, and locals. I personally ran 2-1 over 3 ending up in 2nd overall. Each round was unique and had a fun twist to it. A phenomenal tournament experience and everyone genuinely seemed to enjoy it.
With the tournament wrapped we spent the rest of our evening socializing with vendors, players, and staff. A lot of great networking got done for us and just a great spirit in the room. One of the biggest factors that impressed me, besides the organization, was the amount of younger people who were there playing games. We stayed through the raffle which was awesome to watch a few new friends and one of our own get called for their prizes!
I cannot recommend high enough attending Skirmish Game Con in the next years. Hope to see you there in the future 😉!
